Growing up as the second of three children in a family that moved frequently across the country, Declan was exposed to rich cultures and races that influenced his diverse worldview and creative vision. His multicultural heritage provided him with a unique perspective that has become invaluable in his design work. "I inherited my creativity from my mother and my technical skills from my father," Declan reflected. Coupled with strong Christian values that shape his character and social interactions, Declan possesses all the foundational elements needed for entrepreneurial success.
The Divine Detour
Like many young people, Declan had his life mapped out: law school, a legal career, and all the traditional markers of professional success. But sometimes, life does not always play out in the way we plan it to be, it takes twists, turns and detours. For Declan that detour came in the form of a family friend who noticed something special in Declan's design sketches. "This career path was more of God's guidance than my original plan," Declan admitted. The family friend suggested that he takes designing seriously based on Declan’s casual sketches and this evolved into a deep love for an industry he never imagined entering.
For nearly a decade now, Declan has been immersed in the fashion industry, taking on work even while still in fashion school which is a testament to his commitment and passion for his craft.
Challenges as Character Builders
The fashion industry, particularly in Zimbabwe, presents unique challenges that can discourage many aspiring entrepreneurs. Declan describes it as a "mixed bag"—a young industry still evolving due to economic constraints, where customer perceptions of fashion design are often elementary, and where imported clothing creates fierce competition for local designers.
"Customers often have unrealistic expectations about the time and effort involved in design compared to mere tailoring," Declan explained. "The industry is financially constrained due to competition from imported clothing and second-hand clothes that are often cheaper than our local production costs." Instead of compromising to compete on price, Declan has chosen to compete on quality. His philosophy of "doing things right the first time" and maintaining full commitment without compromise on quality is his competitive edge. This decision teaches us that in a race to the bottom, the winners are those who refuse to participate.
The Power of Community
Starting a business without funds is one of the greatest challenges any entrepreneur can face and Declan's journey was no different. However, his story beautifully illustrates how the right support system can make all the difference. When it mattered most, a long-time mentor and public figure named Prayersoul Mutamangira stepped in with crucial financial support for rentals and never asked for repayment.
"This support was an act of love to help me get on my feet," Declan recalled. This experience highlights a fundamental truth about entrepreneurship that success is rarely a solo journey. The willingness to accept help and the presence of people who believe in your vision can be the difference between giving up and breaking through.
Faith in the Darkness
Declan is refreshingly honest about his current challenges with client traffic and financial challenges. He admits that his true desire is to design evening and formal wear particularly women’s gowns and cocktail dresses which are sophisticated and require meticulous designs. However, due to challenges in the industry he now designs everything that comes his way. Although this dampens his passion, these difficulties have not shaken his resilience. "Quitting has never been an option," he stated firmly. "My ability to stay afloat comes from my faith in God rather than just perseverance or character. Even in difficult times, I have a sense of calm and I know that sometimes progress is made even by simply showing up."

Building More Than a Brand
Declan's brand identity reflects his deeper purpose. The name "Declan," meaning "full of goodness," embodies his brand's objective, while his logo; a broken circle, symbolizes the constant striving for perfection through reinvention and creation. His marketing strategy combines modern digital engagement with timeless relationship-building, utilizing social media platforms alongside powerful word-of-mouth referrals and personal customer engagement.
What sets Declan apart is his vision that extends far beyond personal success. His five-year goal is to participate at the global stage with a store in Milan while simultaneously contributing to Zimbabwe's fashion industry. He dreams of partnering with universities to provide paid attachments for disadvantaged students and helping Zimbabwe develop a distinct national fashion identity. "I want to help Zimbabwe become recognizable by its fashion, similar to how Nigerians or Ghanaians are identifiable by their attire," he explained.

Declan understands that different seasons require different voices so rather than seeking a single mentor, he has cultivated relationships with multiple advisors who provide guidance in different areas. His key character traits of patience, faith, consistency, and perseverance are not just business strategies but the foundations of a family legacy he is building for future generations.
Declan's advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to start regardless of the current level and to always keep dreaming. "Dreams provide motivation, and even showing up on difficult days constitutes progress”. He also encourages fellow fashion designers that their work matters not just for individuals but for the entire country. He encourages them to continue dreaming, designing, and boundary-pushing knowing that the industry will eventually get global recognition eventually.
